This picture was based on a gouache done in 1967 when Thames Street was still a thriving entity.
The river frontage and the street behind were thronged with warehouses that were grouped in separate areas devoted to specific commodoties.
Starting at the Blackfriars end we had Vintners, Furriers, Spices and Fishmongers among the many stocks stored there. All this has now gone, and Thames Street is now a busy dual carriageway.
The painting with its muted tones captures the time when this street was a place of infinite variety.
