A very simple picture of a Norman interior based on the choir of St Bartholomew the Great, Smithfield in London.
The play of light from the clerestory on the choir arches contrasts with the shadows in the aisles and the spectre of St Thomas Becket.
When I was ten years old my father took me around Canterbury Cathedral and whilst walking around the cloisters a figure in a red cassock emerged from the chapter house leading the choristers. This was the ‘Red’ Dean of Canterbury Hewlett Johnson who looked the very incarnation of Beckett.
