Cock o’ the North
Cock o’ the North · #1423 · 23" × 16" · gouache · 2001

This is a painting of one of my favourite locomotives, a P2 Mikado (2-8-2) design by Sir Nigel Gresley, pictured in 1934 waiting to depart from King’s Cross Station.

Here, in its early guise with smoke deflectors before it was rebuilt with an A4 style (streamlined) front. Sadly it was rebuilt by Edward Thompson in the early 1940’s as a Pacific (4-6-2). Never popular after this, it was scrapped early.

I see this as one of my most iconic railway paintings.
