In Search of the Holy Grail · #1416 · 24" × 18" · gouache · 2008

This is in effect a glorified ‘doodle’ which is a form of ‘Automatic Drawing’ where form and structure are affected by the chance juxtaposition of images that flow into my mind as I am drawing.

At an early stage the ‘Grail Legend’ crept in with the introduction of the written legend ‘Corpus Christie’ – the body of Christ and the association of the Grail being cup of the first communion. I am never afraid to throw in other references to other paintings especially those I admire. Here we can see a version of ‘Sir Isumbras at the Ford’ by Sir John Everett Millais in the left hand corner just below the Grail vision surrounded by the body of Christ and hovering above is the winged ‘Shaman’ figure that has occurred in my work over a twenty year period.

To the right is a rustic version of a female figure which is in fact from an early romantic publicity picture of the singer Kate Bush. This represents a figure of youth and sensuality. The picture is redolent of all those images of Arthurian Legends and as a collage took until 2008 to be painted.
