Quo Vadis
Quo Vadis · #1469 · 30" × 20" · gouache · 2009

The Latin ‘Quo Vadis’ translates to ‘where are you going’ and were the words quoted by God to St Peter when he was about to flee Rome making him turn around to face martyrdom.

The picture includes the head and pointing finger of the Emperor Constantine who founded the Roman Christian church. The head and fingers are drawn from the surviving fragments of a large statue of Constantine the Great now placed in the Capitol in Rome.

Constantine’s finger points to a series of balloons floating through the mountains. This symbolises the continued journey of the Christian church through the ages.
