The idea for this painting in based on those French illuminated manuscripts such as ‘Les Tres Jolie Heurs de Duc de Berry’ where the golden age of the medieval world was painted with rose coloured spectacles.
Again the theme is the transitory nature of human civilization. This can be typified by the Louvre in Paris where beneath the 16th century palace, which is now the museum housing the Mona Lisa is the lower part of the 12th century castle.
