The Gap in the Street
The Gap in the Street · #1496 · 30" × 21" · gouache · 2007

This is a fanciful view of London after the Blitz. This is a place I knew well as I walked around it from the age of ten.

This view shows a bomb site where the core of a building is missing and the remains on the walls of the surrounding buildings bear witness to its presence. In the graveyard are tombstones bearing the names of characters from ‘Great Expectations’.

The bollards refer to the fact that originally they were Nelson era canons with cannonballs in their muzzles.
