This was painted from a drawing of 36” x 26” done circa 1969 and comes from the ‘psychedelic’ period of my work, however unlike many of my contemporaries I did not use chemicals to fire my imagination, just the intensity of youth which at times could be quite intense.
The ‘Magic Circle’ of the title, is just that, a circle in the middle which appears as a transparent globe. In the centre of the globe is the Magician and his assistant but outside, things become more chaotic and formless.
The inside of the circle represents the conscious whilst the outside represents the unconscious and the realms of our minds that are unknown to ourselves and are full of the nameless monsters and apparitions that swirl and boil in the ether.
The picture contains a lot of movement and in places, is quite frenetic.
