This was drawn and painted from a real house that had been burnt out on the banks of the River Thames.
The sky echoes the heat and intensity of the fire. The willow tree in the foreground bends towards the river. In the boathouse is a boat bearing the name ‘spindrift’. The house is one of the mock Tudor Arts & Crafts mansions of the 1890’s.
