This was painted from a small sketch carried out circa 1969.
The subject was based on the books of Mervyn Peake especially Titus Groan and Ghormenghast, which is why this particular picture looks more like a book illustration.
The sense of space and distance is particularly striking.
In the mid 1970’s I illustrated two books for the publisher Duckworths, ‘Two Monsoons’ and ‘The Woolworth Madonna’.
