This was painted from a drawing made to publicise a book I illustrated for Duckworths written by Theon Wilkinson called ‘Two Monsoons’.
The book detailed the vulnerability of Europeans in the Indian subcontinent through their manner of death and their memorials.
The drawing featured in Duckworth’s catalogue of forthcoming books, and showed a European cemetery in the Indian countryside, complete with human skull and a snake charmer.
The proceeds of the book helped to maintain the cemeteries and in some cases turn them into parks.
