We’re on the Road to Nowhere
We’re on the Road to Nowhere · #1533 · 25" × 18" · gouache · 2008

The title comes from a pop song but also relates to Samuel Becket’s play ‘Erewhon’ which is of course nowhere backwards.

The original drawing was made in 1990 when I was in Mayday Hospital in Croydon after an operation to remove a malignant melanoma.

Whilst in the hospital I drew eight drawings as I prepared to leave my mark on the world if I did not survive the operation. As it happened I endured 25 days before I was given the all clear.

From that moment I lived life day by day. The picture shows a night view of my 1934 Armstrong Siddeley headlights blazing coming down the road to a crossroads with a signpost with four directions all reversed.
